Description
In this section we will be describing how to brew in Minecraft. Brewing involves taking ingredients and mixing them together in the brewing stand. You then transform them into potions. These potions will give you an advantage in the Minecraft world. Lets now take a look at how you will brew your potions. Brewing requires a few items that are hard to come by. These mainly consist of a brewing stand, blaze powder and nether wart. These are the items that you will need to obtain before you can start brewing.
What items you will need
What equipment will you need to make your potions.
These are the essentials that you will need to brew potions.
What it is. | What it looks like. | What it does. |
---|---|---|
Brewing stand. | ![]() | This is where you will place your items to make potions. |
Blaze powder. | ![]() | This is the fuel for the brewing stand. |
Water bottles. | ![]() | Crafted from glass bottles filled with any water. |
Nether wart. | ![]() | The base for most potions. |
To make a brewing stand, you will need to obtain a blaze rod. You can only obtain it by killing blazes in the nether. When you kill a blaze you will have a 50% chance that the blaze will drop a blaze rod. If you have a looting enchantment then you can increase the amount that can be dropped. The next items that you will need to get for the brewing stand is cobblestone or any type cobbled stone. Place these in the crafting table. Arrange the stone across the centre of the table. Put the blaze rod in the centre on the top row.
Blaze powder is made by placing a blaze rod into any block in the crafting table. Then, drag the blaze powder to your inventory.
Nether wart is obtained in the nether in the nether fortress and bastion remnants. You will find them specifically in the treasure room variant.
These are the basic items that you will need to use to craft potions. These items will set you up for the brewing section of the game.
Lets now have a look at how you might use these items.
This is what a brewing stand looks when clicked on. First of all you will need to put blaze powder in the very left hand item slot. This will ensure that the brewing stand is powered for you to make potions. For the next step place up to three glass bottles in the bottom slots provided. This way, you can make up to three potions at the same time. Be aware that this will increase the other items that are needed.

When you have made up these they are known as potions of awkward. This is the base potion needed to make all other potions. You will need to add other ingredients to make other potions. To make a swiftness potion, remove the nether wart. Then, place the sugar in its place. This will then make swiftness potions that will add 20% to your speed. The next step for these would be add a modifier to this potion. Modifiers are ingredients that change the mechanics of the potion. So for example if we add redstone dust into the section that started with nether wart. This will change the potion from lasting three minutes to lasting 8 minutes. See the section below on modifiers for a more detailed explanation of modifiers.
Lets have a look at how to make different potions.
Below is a table of potions that are available to make from the brewing stand. These potions are level 1 potions with no modifiers added.

Using modifiers.
Modifiers are ingredients that you can use to change the effect, duration or potency of a potion. To use modifiers you need place a potion into to brewing stand that already has an effect and then add the modifier. Be aware that when using modifiers some effects will be changed on the duration and potency. These values will change for some of the potions that you create. Below are some of the enhancements you can make to your potions.
Modifier | Enhancement |
---|---|
Redstone dust | Extends duration |
Glowstone dust | Increases potency |
Gunpowder | Makes it throwable |
Dragons breath | Makes it linger on the ground |
Fermented spider eye | Corrupts potion into opposite effect |
These are some of the basics of using the brewing stand. There are other potions available to use and you can also use some of the modifiers to change the effect of these potions. Have fun!
