A Minecraft Honey Farm is one of the most useful automated farms you can build, providing a steady supply of honey bottles and honeycomb for crafting and building projects. Whether you need waxed copper blocks, beehives, candles, or decorative honeycomb blocks, this simple farm will keep your storage stocked with minimal effort. In this guide, you’ll learn how to build an efficient Minecraft Honey Farm, the materials required, and tips to maximise production in both Java and Bedrock Edition.
What is a Minecraft Honey Farm?
This farm makes gathering honey or honeycomb easier and works when the observer watches the changing state of the beehive. The beehive goes through 5 states and the observer triggers when it reaches state 5. This will push the dispenser to trigger which will either collect honeycomb if the dispenser holds shears or a honey bottle if bottles are held in the dispenser.
From this farm you can obtain honey bottles or honeycomb which can be used in many ways:
- Honey blocks – crafted from 4 honey bottles. These slow down movement, reduce fall damage, allow for creative contraptions in Redstone builds.
- Honey bottles – food source, restoring 6 hunger points.
- Honey bottles – a cure for poison.
- Honeycomb – craft beehive, create waxed copper blocks, decorative honeycomb blocks.
Honey can be got in a number of ways:
- A glass bottle on a beehive to get bottle of honey.
- Shears on the beehive will get you honeycomb.
- Campfire placed under a beehive will keep the bee’s calm.
- Honey farm is the best way to have a steady supply of honey and honeycomb.

How to build a Minecraft Honey Farm
Here we will explain in detail how to build a Minecraft Honey Farm. Please follow the instructions carefully.

- Let’s first build a 5 x 3 block structure on the floor.

- Next let’s place down a row of 5 comparators across the middle of the blocks. Ensure that the comparators are facing the front of your build.

- Let’s place a 2 block wall on top of the front of your build. The two prongs of the comparator should be facing the wall.

- We need now to place dispensers facing down.

- Let’s place stone blocks above the comparators.
- Now place stone slabs to the back of the stone blocks on the top half.

- The next step is to place the floating slabs. The easiest way to do this is to place 2 blocks down by the side of the build and then place the slab to the top of this block.
- You then need to build across the 5 slabs.
- Destroy the 2 blocks that you built.

- Next let’s place Redstone dust on all of the blocks and slabs on the top of the build.

- Let’s now place Redstone dust on the stone blocks behind the comparator.
- Place Redstone dust on the slabs at the back of the build.

- In the next stage of the build, let’s place a double chest down that is level with right hand side of the build.
- Place 5 hoppers down that lead straight into the chest.
- Finally place 5 bee hives directly under the dispensers and on top of the hoppers.

- Let’s now place glass around the front of the build, this will enclose the bees in.
- From inside the build place a door on the opposite end to the chest. This should make it so that behind the glass is completely enclosed.

- Place flowers on each of the spare blocks behind the glass.
- Finally put bees behind the glass enclosure.

- Please ensure that you fill the dispensers. If you place shears this will get you honeycomb. If you put bottles in the dispensers you will get honey bottles.
Hints and tips for building a Minecraft Honey Farm
Common problems and solutions
- If your build is not collecting honey you will need to ensure that there are glass bottles in all 9 slots of the dispenser.
- If your build is not collecting honeycomb, you will need to ensure that your shears have not run out.
Minecraft Honey Farm FAQ
How do you get bees in a Minecraft honey farm?
You can attract bees using flowers. Hold any flower in your hand and bees will follow you. Lead them to your bee farm and place them near your beehives or bee nests.
What is the difference between honey bottles and honeycomb?
Honey bottles are collected by using an empty glass bottle on a full beehive or bee nest. Honeycomb is collected using shears. Honey bottles can be crafted into honey blocks, while honeycomb is used for candles, beehives, honeycomb blocks, and waxing copper.
How do you collect honey without angering bees?
Place a campfire directly underneath the beehive or bee nest. The smoke calms the bees, allowing you to harvest honey bottles or honeycomb safely without being attacked.
How do I know when a beehive is full?
A beehive is full when honey is visibly dripping from the sides. Automated farms often use observers to detect when the hive reaches this state and trigger collection automatically.
Can honey farms be fully automated?
Yes. Using observers, dispensers, bottles or shears, and storage systems, you can create a fully automatic honey farm that collects resources without manual harvesting.
Do honey farms work in both Java and Bedrock Edition?
Yes. Basic honey farm designs work in both Java and Bedrock Edition, although some redstone mechanics may require slight adjustments depending on the version you’re playing.
Why are my bees not producing honey?
Bees need access to flowers and must be able to travel between the flowers and their hive. Make sure there are flowers nearby and that blocks are not preventing the bees from reaching them.
What are honey farms used for?
Honey farms provide renewable honey bottles and honeycomb. These resources are used for crafting honey blocks, candles, beehives, honeycomb blocks, and waxing copper to prevent oxidation.
How many bees should a honey farm have?
A beehive can hold up to three bees. For efficient honey production, most farms use multiple hives with three bees in each hive.
Can bees despawn in Minecraft?
No. Bees do not naturally despawn once they exist in your world. However, they can die from damage, lava, fire, or hostile mobs, so protecting your farm is important.
